There comes a time when for most people, your reading style and preferences change. You start to like what you previously enjoyed less and less, and find yourself gravitating towards reads you might have never given a second glance to before. You find former favorite genres frustrating, and gain new appreciation for ones you previously thought boring. For me that time is now.
After DNF-ing my 5th or 6th high fantasy YA this year (An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson), I'm slowly being more honest with myself that this genre is just not for me anymore. I don't get the enjoyment I once did from discovering completely new worlds. Instead, I now find this difficult to follow and too time consuming to grasp, often leading me to misunderstand the plot simply because there is too much other information I need to comprehend. While this will sadly leave many books and series on my shelves unfinished, I'm learning that I would much rather spend my time reading things I enjoy vs trying to fight through books I really don't want to be reading. In the long run, this will benefit me more and make me a happier reader.
Will I come back to high fantasy in the future? Maybe, who knows. Maybe I'll reach a point in my life where that elaborate escape is necessary and I take comfort in new worlds and ideas. But for now, it's not needed. In its place, I'm really loving adult mysteries and thrillers. I still have my love for YA contemporaries and literary fiction. Even low fantasy will continue to be a regular read for me. I just need to stay away from the high fantasy hype for a while, and if this genre and I are meant to be, it will find me again some day.
What is a genre you have grown away from? What has replaced it for you?

I can never read the same genre for too long, or I get tired of it. I am more of a circular reader. One example, I have hardly read any romance in years... but I've been wanting to read it more and more. And similar to you, I've been wanting to read YA fantasy less and less. But I am still more pulled toward YA Fantasy... I just haven't been enjoying them as much lately.
ReplyDeleteHear you! I was finding some of my favorite authors tedious so I started reading more suspense/thrillers and enjoyed the change of pace, I'd avoided them before, but I've learned how to pick them better.
ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble with high fantasy at the moment. For me, it has to do with how slow the book is at times. Also they tend to be bigger and my mind has a hard time doing any one thing for too long.
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling similarly about YA fantasy too, but I seem to have switched to mostly liking YA Contemporary instead of YA fantasy. I think that I'm just tired of tropes and the high school settings.
ReplyDeleteI grow away and come back to just about all the genres monthly. I try to not read too much of the same type of books in a row so that I don't burn out on the genre as a whole. But I can't do ANY YA Fiction right now. I can do YA Fantasy or Sci-Fi, but I'm too old for the normal teen life books haha
ReplyDeleteI read all of the fiction genres except Historical. I haven't faced such a problem, yet. Maybe it's because I read so many genres and switch between them frequently?
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! I used to read a lot of crime/mystery then switched to romance, then dystopian and paranormal and back to some mystery lol. Wishy washy much lol.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree! I don't know if I have moved away from certain genres, but I know for sure, I have gravitated towards genres I never read before. The most recent one in years has been Historical Fiction. I am loving it more and more!
ReplyDeleteI can't really say a genre I've gone off. Over the last year I've become more interested in psychological thrillers than I used to. I like a book that makes me think.
ReplyDeleteI have however gone off an authors work. This is an author that I have read for many, many years. Think she must have 20+ books out, and until the last few I'd read them all. But I came to realise that they were all the same.
The names of the characters might of been different and they each had different jobs and location, but the actual plot was the same and the last one I read of hers I didn't even finish as I got bored.
Haha I am the same. I change genre every now and then to keep things interesting. But now I am currently immersed in reading dark books or erotica, basically any books with sexy and mysterious alpha, imma pounce lol
