My Review

Firstly, I really appreciate the trigger warnings right at the beginning of the book. This book deals heavily with sexual assault, and letting the reader know that in advance is super important. The story was incredibly engaging and I flew through this read as fast as possible. It was dark, and gritty, and vengeful, and overall fantastic. Jade has a vendetta and she and her friends won't stop until everyone is taken down. While the logistics of some of the things that happened weren't super believable, I didn't even care. I cheered for Jade and felt the heart-pounding thrill she felt as she took her enemies out one by one. Any book that can get me that invested is a win in my book.

Things to Keep You Occupied During a Storm (We Speak in Storms by Natalie Lund)

Storms can suck. We're trapped inside. Sometimes the power goes off. Cabin fever starts to build and you don't know what to do with yourself. In We Speak in Storms by Natalie Lund, three teens have experienced firsthand the devastation a storm can bring and how hard it is to overcome.  

In an effort to curb that cabin fever, here's a list of 10 things to keep yourself occupied during a storm:

1) Read! Of course, my favorite pastime would be first. Use this time stuck inside to pick up a book you've been meaning to get to and read your heart out. Bonus: this can be done by candlelight even if the power goes out!

2) Netflix binge. Yes, power is required for this one. If you're lucky enough to still have your lights, curl up under a blanket, make a big bowl of popcorn, and 

3) Pick up a craft project. Love to knit? Still working on that watercolor painting? Pick up your favorite project and let the calming nature of doing something creative put your mind at ease.

4) Clean up your room. Sorry, it's boring I know! But there's no better feeling than having a freshly cleaned room. Get it out of the way while you're stuck inside so you can really enjoy the good weather once the storm has passed.

5) Tell ghost stories. I will never grow out of telling ghost stories! There's something about gathering around in a circle when the power goes out and telling stories by candlelight that really sends chills up your spine!

6) Cuddle your pets. Animals sense atmospheric pressure changes and can be really freaked out when storms roll around! Give them some extra cuddles during the storm to put both them and yourself at ease.

7) Relax to some music. Take the mood lighting of flickering candles and add some of your favorite tunes to the mix, creating a relaxing oasis for you to ride out the storm in.

8) Play board or card games. Gather up your friends, family, roommates, whoever is around and get to some good old fashioned competition! Whether you're throwing down cards in Uno or snatching up properties in Monopoly, playing games is sure to make the time go by quickly. 

9) Talk to one another. This, like others, only works if you have other people around, but how often do we sit down with one another and actually talk? Ask them how they are, what's been happening in their lives. Take this opportunity to get to know each other. And even if it's family and you think you know them pretty well, I guarantee they have stories you haven't heard yet!

10) Stay safe. This last one isn't as fun as it is seriously important. Storms can be extremely dangerous and destructive, and if you've got a tornado, hurricane, or even just a thunderstorm heading your way, your first priority should be your safety. Pay attention to weather broadcasts and take any advice given by professionals regarding seeking shelter or evacuation.

As I've gotten older, I've started to fall more and more in love with cooking. Especially doing keto, I eat 90% of my meals at home, so I love experimenting and tweaking recipes to keep things interesting. Because of that, I obviously had to jump at the chance to be part of the blog tour for an exciting cookbook!

My Review

The book itself is high quality and full of glossy pictures that just make your mouth water! There is a wide variety of recipes that fit a ton of different occasions, ranging from super simple to elaborate. I love that the book also codes each recipe, allowing for those with dietary restrictions to easily find recipes that work for them. It has a fantastic introduction section that helps you learn the basic concepts of Indian cooking as well.

This past weekend, I tried the recipe for the Herb and Spice Roasted Chicken. Instead of roasting it in the oven however, we wrapped the chicken in foil packets and stuck it on the grill to reduce the cooking time. It was absolutely delicious and incredibly simple to make! I didn't even have time to take a picture of it before we dove right in. I can't wait to try out more recipes in this fantastic cookbook. My only reason for taking off a star is that some of the ingredients are a little obscure, and some recipes require just a tiny amount of an expensive ingredient that has to be bought in large quantities.

My Review

My bookshelves are full of thrillers, both adult and YA, and this one is fully deserving of a spot on those shelves. Sadie by Courtney Summers is a YA thriller about one dead girl and another missing one. This story completely sucked me in from the beginning, and I flew through it in a few short hours.  It is told in two perspectives, the first being a radio podcast detailing the story of the girls, and the other from Sadie herself, the girl who has gone missing. I loved the podcast aspect, and found this to be a unique and thorough way to tell perspectives other than Sadie's and provide additional details. 

I really admired Sadie as a strong, motivated character who would stop at nothing to follow through with her mission. Her love for her sister spoke volumes, and she constantly put Mattie above herself, growing up way too early to ensure that her little sister was provided for (even when that sister acted spoiled and ungrateful). I also appreciated that she had a stutter, since this is a disability that many people have yet is underrepresented in literature. I would have loved to have seen more of Mattie, but that just wasn't the nature of this book.

The writing in this story was so descriptive and enveloping, I felt transported right into the scenes, watching Sadie pull her knife or question someone. This book was raw and gritty and real, both disturbing and beautiful all at once.

I do want to put a trigger warning on this book for child molestation and child pornography. This was dealt with in a tasteful manner, and it is important to bring these issues to light. Far too many children experience what the characters in this book go through every day.

Overall I enjoyed every minute I spent with this book, as twisted as it was, and it will be one that sticks with me for quite a while.

My Review

As you guys probably know, I recently got to go to London, and absolutely fell in love with the city. Knowing I had this trip planned, I jumped at the chance to take part in this blog tour. But big disclaimer here: this is not just any city guidebook. No, this is a satirical, uproariously funny guidebook, poking fun at niche hipster culture.

Each page had me cracking a smile if not all out belly laughing. The wit and cleverness just roll off the page, but I do have a very dry and sarcastic sense of humor. Many of the entries are accompanied by a high quality and Instagram-worthy image, further emphasizing the overall "extra-ness" of everything in this guide.

This was a fast, funny, novelty read that I really enjoyed. It was very short, and I would have liked to see a little more content.

Just know going into this that this guide will not help tourists make their way through London. This fantastic work of fiction belongs in the humor section of the bookstore, rather than the travel section.

Somewhat surprisingly, Jeremy is also a city lawyer - formerly at DLA Piper and now a General Counsel within a large private equity group. Jeremy is utterly obsessed with travel books and although he might poke fun at urban fads, hipster fried chicken is his guilty pleasure. He also has an unusual interest in clothes hangers.

Amy Cole Has Lost Her Mind by Elizabeth McGivern

Synopsis

My Review

I've been in need of a good laugh, and this book really did deliver! Despite needing trigger warnings for miscarriages, suicide and depression, this book had me rolling with laughter. Amy is such an authentic character, always second guessing herself and making a fool of herself around strangers, but in a real way rather than an "oh I'm clumsy and socially awkward but that adds to my adorkable charm" way. Throughout the story, she and Elle come up with half-cocked schemes to try to turn Amy's life around, always resulting in hilarity. Though their intentions are always the best, their methods are not always conventional, ending in results such as Amy dripping hot wax all over her husband or getting her face sat on by someone in a sauna.

While I'm not a mom, I feel like moms could easily relate to the chaos caused by Amy's two boys, Arthur and Adam, and to the cult of "perfect moms" dead set on telling others how they should parent their children.

Even though this dealt with some difficult subjects, I felt that it was done in an appropriate manner. While the book as a whole is humorous and entertaining, these tough subjects were not made light of in any way.

This book also included an excerpt from the next in the series, Amy Cole is Zen as F*ck, so that means more Amy and Elle...hooray! Can't wait to dive in to more of this uproarious chaos!

Can Dreams Come True? by Krysten Lindsay Hager

Cute YA contemporaries are always easy, enjoyable reads for me. They take me back to an easier time in my life with full force nostalgia. Can Dreams Come True? by Krysten Lindsay Hager did exactly that and more. 

Official Synopsis

Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. 

A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?

My Review

I really enjoyed this read! First, I really liked that it didn't have the typical absent parent trope that so many YA contemporaries are famous for...Cecily's parents were very involved and very protective of her. The characters were all incredibly relatable, taking me back to my own high school years comprised of best friends, backstabbers, and boyfriend stealers. I do think Cecily was a little naive compared to some of her friends, but I think a lot of that has to do with this being a clean teen novel vs having anything risque or inappropriate in it. Even though Cecily finds herself falling in love with a pop star, this was done in a realistic way. 

I also appreciate that this is going to be a series! Most YA contemporaries are stand alone novels, which is okay, but sometimes I just want more of a character or storyline. I can't wait to see what happens with Cecily and Andrew in the future! This was cute and fluffy and good as an escape from everyday adult life. I thought it was a little simple for an adult reader, but would be great for middle schoolers and younger high schoolers. It also ended pretty suddenly, but that doesn't bother me as much here as it normally would since I know there is more to come in another book.

Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

I have been so excited for this book release, so I jumped at the chance to be a part of this blog tour! Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett is a cute contemporary that follows Zorie, a teen girl looking to go on a week-long camping trip with her friends to escape some personal drama. Turns out, some of that drama follows her on the trip, and after a mishap at the campsite, the whole week becomes something Zorie never could have planned for.

Ever since last year’s homecoming dance, best friends-turned-best enemies Zorie and Lennon have made an art of avoiding each other. It doesn’t hurt that their families are the modern day, Californian version of the Montagues and Capulets.

With no one but each other for company, Zorie and Lennon have no choice but to hash out their issues via witty jabs and insults as they try to make their way to safety. My Review

I absolutely adored this book! While I'd never read anything by Jenn Bennett before, I'd heard so much about her books, and the hype is definitely justified. I loved the main characters in this story, and I really identified with Zorie. Zorie is a planner girl (all the way down to her washi tape!) like me, and just like Zorie I panic when things aren't fully planned out in advance. I thought it was really unique that Zorie had a passion for astronomy, since this is something you don't see too often in YA. I loved Lennon as well. I just wanted to reach into the story and hug him for everything he'd been through. Some of the minor characters really rubbed me the wrong way, but I know they were supposed to. Watching Zorie's family dynamic in this book was a bit hard. From her mail discovery at the beginning, to her dad's firecracker temper, I really felt for Zorie and what she was dealing with.

I flew through this read. While that's usually the case with contemporaries, I didn't even realize how quickly I was moving through this one until I was almost at the end. I thought the writing style and language were definitely appropriate, and did not feel like an adult "trying too hard" to write for teenagers. I loved that the typical YA trope of "absent parent syndrome" wasn't a thing here, and that Zorie's parents were actively engaged (even if sometimes in the wrong way) in what was going on in their daughter's life.

Unfortunately I was just left wanting more, as is true with many contemporaries. The ending seemed a little rushed and was over too soon for my taste.
